He graduated from Nanwu University, working in tech (games/software) while co-owning the 'Overtime' bar with his high school roommate Su Hao'an. The story takes place in the fictional modern city of Nanwu (filmed in Chongqing). Wen Yifan is a news reporter for Nanwu TV. They were desk mates at Nanwu No.1 High School. In high school, Sang Yan pursued Wen Yifan, who liked him back, but she rejected him on a rainy night due to her father's death, mother's remarriage, and abuse by relatives. She changed her college choices and left for Yihe, cutting ties. Six years later, Wen Yifan returns to Nanwu. Her friend Zhong Siqiao drags her to the newly opened 'Overtime', where she reunites with owner Sang Yan; both pretend not to know each other. After being harassed by a former roommate, Sang Yan protects her. When his own apartment is damaged by fire, he moves into her shared apartment via Su Hao'an's arrangement, knowing it's her. During their cohabitation, Wen Yifan's sleepwalking worsens, often entering Sang Yan's room. He teases her verbally but secretly installs safety padding and watches over her. She opens up and pursues him. Sang Yan confesses in the rain: 'All these years, I still only like you.' They officially date after he kisses her on her birthday. Later, Che Xingde, her step-grandmother's brother, stalks and blackmails her. She disappears without notice. Sang Yan investigates and learns that Che Xingde attempted to assault them in high school, causing them to fall from a balcony—this was the truth behind her rejection and departure. Sang Yan admits he often flew to Yihe just to watch her from afar and buy newspapers featuring her reports.
